Workplace tragedy in Caserta: 24-year-old RFI worker dies

Caserta — Another young life lost on the job. The tragedy occurred in the middle of the night inside the construction site of the Vairano-Caianello train station, in the municipality of Vairano Scalo, in the province of Caserta. The victim was Giancarlo Palomba, a 24-year-old worker for Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) and a member of Filt-CGIL.

The young man was working with colleagues carrying out routine maintenance on the line when, for reasons still under investigation, the tragic accident occurred, leaving him with no chance of survival.

Emergency services arrived immediately on the scene, but there was nothing they could do for the twenty-four-year-old. The competent authorities began the usual surveys and opened an investigation to reconstruct the exact circumstances of the incident and verify compliance with safety regulations within the construction site.

The news has deeply shocked the local community and the rail transport industry. In a joint statement, the secretariats of Filt-CGIL Campania and Caserta expressed their deep shock and sorrow over the incident:

In this moment of immense grief, fully respecting the work of the competent authorities, we will await the investigations and decisions of the relevant authorities, which will clarify the cause of death. This is a terrible tragedy that leaves us shocked and speechless and affects the entire railway community.
