Caserta is the worst-hit country in Campania for workplace deaths, with 64 victims already in 2026.

Caserta is the Campania province with the highest number of workplace deaths since the beginning of 2026. This was reported by Fillea-Cgil Campania, which described the toll as "already dramatic" at the end of July: 64 workers lost their lives, between accidents that occurred during work activities and during the commute to and from work.

According to data presented by regional secretary general Vincenzo Maio, Caserta recorded 17 victims, followed by Salerno with 16, Naples with 15, Avellino with 7, and Benevento with 4. Added to these numbers are five Campania workers who died outside the region and ten deaths while traveling, confirming a true emergency affecting the entire production system.

Construction remains the most exposed sector

Of all the manufacturing sectors, construction continues to pay the highest price. Falls from heights, crushing injuries, collapses, machinery accidents, and load-handling accidents remain the main causes of fatal injuries.

According to Fillea-Cgil, stricter regulations are not enough unless they are accompanied by effective controls, ongoing training, investments in prevention, and a different work organization.
"Safety," Maio emphasizes, "is too often considered a cost to be reduced rather than the primary investment for businesses and workers."

Victims of all ages and in all sectors

The union's analysis highlights how the phenomenon doesn't exclusively affect older workers. People in their twenties and over-seventies continue to die, although the high number of victims over 55, still employed in particularly demanding jobs, is worrying.

Almost all of the deaths are men (59), while only 5 are women, but what stands out is the breadth of the sectors involved: in addition to construction, there are agriculture, transport, logistics, maintenance, crafts and services.
For the union, no sector can now consider itself safe.

“Behind every number is a broken family”

In his speech, Maio urges us not to reduce the phenomenon to a simple statistic.
"Behind every death are fathers, mothers, children, and colleagues who left home to work and never returned. Every workplace death represents a defeat for the state, institutions, businesses, unions, and society as a whole."

The secretary of Fillea-CGIL also reiterated that there is no fatality when a worker loses their life: "Laws are essential, but without controls, adequate tools, and a true culture of prevention, we will continue to count innocent victims."

The appeal: "Commenting on tragedies is no longer enough."

The results of the first seven months of 2026 lead the union to call for an immediate change of direction.
"Sixty-four deaths in seven months," Maio concludes, "demonstrate that we can't simply comment on every tragedy. It's time to act to ensure these deaths don't happen again."
