The municipality of Atrani has signed memoranda of understanding for the conservation of the Caretta caretta turtle and the promotion of resilient green cities, strengthening its role in environmental protection of the Amalfi Coast.

Atrani is committed to the protection of sea turtles and environmental resilience.
The small town of Atrani has taken a significant step toward environmental protection by signing two important memoranda of understanding promoted by Legambiente as part of European projects co-financed by the LIFE program.
The first, called “Comuni Amici delle Tartarughe Marine,” is part of the LIFE Turtlenest project dedicated to the conservation of the Caretta caretta sea turtle, while the second, “Città Verdi Resilienti,” is part of the broader LIFE+ A_GreeNet project aimed at improving the quality and resilience of urban greenery.
Mayor Michele Siravo emphasized the importance of these commitments, which include concrete actions such as responsible management of beaches potentially used by turtles for nesting, the reduction of nighttime light pollution, and manual coastal cleanups.
“For a coastal area like ours, densely built up and subject to tourism and climate pressures, these are not simply symbolic additions, but fundamental operational tools,” he declared.
The LIFE Turtlenest project, coordinated for the Amalfi Coast by Luigi Sommariva of Legambiente, has found a dedicated and open partner in Atrani, strengthening collaboration between local communities and institutions. In a statement, the Legambiente Costa d'Amalfi APS expressed satisfaction with the signing of the protocols, highlighting how this decision represents a significant step forward for the Amalfi Coast in protecting biodiversity and combating climate change.
The municipality of Atrani thus confirms its role as a model of sustainability, demonstrating that even small communities can adopt concrete environmental policies to improve the quality of life of their communities and preserve coastal and marine ecosystems.
