Portici abandons polystyrene: new polypropylene crates for the fish industry

Portici is making a significant leap toward environmental sustainability with the introduction of reusable polypropylene crates for the fish industry, permanently replacing traditional disposable polystyrene.

This morning, the official delivery ceremony for the new crates took place at Porto del Granatello. The crates are the result of an experimental project promoted by the Litorale Miglio d'Oro Flag, with the support of the Campania Region and FEAMP funding for the municipalities of Portici and Torre del Greco.

The delivery ceremony was attended by Mayor Claudio Teodonno, Councilor for the Environment Florinda Verde, Flag President Maurizio Minichino, and project coordinator Luca Tortora. The polypropylene boxes represent an innovative and more durable solution than polystyrene: solid and flexible materials, capable of withstanding impacts, weight, and temperature fluctuations without damage.

Furthermore, they are designed to undergo repeated washing and sanitization cycles at high temperatures in local hubs, ensuring maximum hygiene and health safety.

"The Litorale Miglio d'Oro Flag, as technical advisor and manager of the local hubs, coordinates the distribution, collection, and sanitization of the crates, creating a circular economy system aimed at reducing marine pollution and waste production," explains Tortora. The crates, equipped with microchips for complete traceability, allow monitoring of every stage of the supply chain, from the landing of the catch to the final consumer.

The system was developed in collaboration with ASL Napoli 3 Sud, the University of Naples Federico II, and the Coast Guard, ensuring high standards of safety and hygiene. Councilor Verde emphasizes the importance of this project: "With this step, Portici is among the first Italian municipalities to eliminate polystyrene from fishing activities, protecting the sea and promoting a forward-looking sustainability model."

Today's distribution marks a crucial step towards a more eco-friendly and innovative seafood supply chain, consolidating the Golden Mile's role as a virtuous laboratory for the entire Campania region.
