These are the final pieces of the puzzle left by Costantino Russo, 35, son of Giuseppe Russo, known in criminal circles as "Peppe 'o Padrino," a longtime member of the Russo faction of the Casalesi clan, who has been detained for over twenty years and subjected to the 41-bis regime.

This epilogue, at least for now, does not close the case but raises a series of questions that will accompany the investigation by the Naples District Anti-Mafia Directorate and the competent Prosecutor's Office.

Investigators remain convinced that suicide was the likely cause. However, numerous uncertainties remain that only technical investigations and further investigations will be able to clarify.

The question hanging over the investigation: why wasn't he under video surveillance?

This is, above all, the question that accompanies the family's grief today. According to what has emerged, Costantino Russo was held in solitary confinement in Ward T2 of the Secondigliano prison. A few days earlier, he had already attempted suicide, an extreme act thwarted thanks to the timely intervention of the Penitentiary Police officers.

This very precedent makes the reconstruction of the last hours even more delicate.

The family, while not questioning the suicide hypothesis, demands to know why a prisoner considered particularly psychologically fragile and already the subject of a previous self-harm attempt was not placed on continuous video surveillance.

A circumstance that will inevitably be the subject of investigations ordered by the judiciary.

Repentance and that journey interrupted after a few days

There's another question hanging over the entire affair. Did Costantino Russo regret having repented? It's a question no one, at least today, can answer.

On July 7th, he was arrested as part of the raid by the Anti-Mafia Investigative Directorate that targeted the Russo faction with 23 precautionary measures, including his twenty-three-year-old brother Nohak.

After just a week in prison, he decided to break with his criminal past, asking to begin cooperating with the justice system. A decision that would ultimately cause an irreversible rift with his clan.

According to leaks, Russo had renounced his appeal to the Court of Review, dismissed his legal counsel, and appointed a lawyer experienced in assisting collaborators with justice. A series of decisions considered by investigators to be a concrete sign of his intention to embark on a path of no return.

Confessions to magistrates and the mystery of the seized notebook

What had he already told the prosecutors of the District Anti-Mafia Directorate? Who had he implicated? What criminal connections had he begun to uncover?

These are questions that, at least for now, investigators are keeping strictly confidential.

During the inspection, a notebook containing notes related to the recently initiated collaboration process was seized from the cell.

That booklet today represents one of the most delicate investigative elements of the entire affair.

Investigators will have to determine whether it contains reconstructions of the clan's internal relationships, names of members, references to the organization's assets, or information useful to the ongoing investigations. At the same time, they will need to reconstruct the contents of the initial reports already submitted to anti-mafia magistrates.

The second attempt left no escape

The first alarm bells rang on July 17. Just twenty-four hours after formally announcing his willingness to cooperate with justice, Russo attempted suicide inside the penitentiary.

The Penitentiary Police officers had managed to save him. Last Monday, shortly before midnight, they made their second attempt.

According to the investigative reconstruction, he hanged himself using some ropes attached to the window bars of his cell. By the time officers and paramedics arrived, it was too late. Attempts to resuscitate him continued for a long time, but all efforts proved futile.

The intervention of the DDA and the investigations into the death

The magistrate on duty from the District Anti-Mafia Directorate, Alessandra Converso, the coroner, specialists from the Forensic Police, and investigators from the Naples Flying Squad attended the scene of the tragedy.

The body was seized and placed at the disposal of the judicial authorities, who will decide whether to order an autopsy to definitively ascertain the cause of death and verify any additional information useful to the investigation.

At the same time, all the protocols adopted by the prison administration with respect to the inmate after the first suicide attempt will be examined.

The role in the clan and the organization's assets

According to the reconstruction of the District Anti-Mafia Directorate, Costantino Russo was not a simple affiliate.

For investigators, he had become one of the main points of reference for the Russo faction, historically allied with the Schiavone family and linked to the Casalesi clan.

He was accused of managing the clan's common fund, distributing funds intended to support the families of prisoners, establishing connections between the leaders held in prison and their members still at liberty, and managing a network of fictitious names aimed at concealing assets and investments.

The financial investigation had already identified numerous businesses believed to be linked to the criminal organization: the Bar Miramare, the Chalet del Mare, the Conca Beach, La Scimmietta Bis, the New Crazy Horse, as well as alleged investments in a sports shop, a beauty salon, the acquisition of shares in the Nereo Club, and a complex drug trafficking network.

A death that risks leaving unanswered questions

The death of Costantino Russo comes at probably the most delicate moment of the entire investigation into the Russo faction.

His possible investigative contribution could have provided investigators with an updated picture of the clan's structure, its relationships with imprisoned leaders, its economic strategies, and the new criminal dynamics that have developed in recent years.

Now that path has suddenly come to an end.

A farewell letter to his family remains. The notes seized by investigators remain. And above all, an investigation remains, aimed at clarifying not only the cause of death, but also whether all necessary measures had been taken to protect a prisoner who had already shown a concrete risk of suicide and who, due to his role and his choice to cooperate with the State, represented one of the most sensitive subjects in the recent investigations into the Caserta Camorra.
