Five Minutes Before Dark: The Mystery of Costantino Russo's Death, Between Interrupted Repentance and the DDA's Investigations

The death of Costantino Russo, son of Giuseppe Russo, known as "Peppe 'o Padrino," a historic member of the Russo clan with ties to the Casalesi clan, remains shrouded in mystery. After expressing his willingness to cooperate with justice, he reportedly took a sudden step back.

A few days after his suicide in his cell, the District Anti-Mafia Directorate is now trying to reconstruct his last phone calls, conversations with family members, and the context surrounding his death. The precautionary order also highlights allegations regarding the management of a vast financial and business portfolio attributed to the suspect.

Five minutes before dark

There are questions that, even after weeks, still remain unanswered.

Why would Costantino Russo, thirty-five, son of the historic Casalesi boss Giuseppe Russo, known in criminal circles as “Peppe 'o Padrino,” decide to take his own life just when, according to investigations, the prospect of collaborating with justice seemed to be opening up?

Why would that option be suddenly abandoned? And above all: had the real risk of suicide been assessed for an inmate who had already demonstrated particular psychological fragility?

These are the questions currently surrounding the investigation by the Naples District Anti-Mafia Directorate, which is focusing on the prisoner's last hours, his contacts from prison, and the phone calls made in the days immediately preceding his death. Investigators are attempting to reconstruct a precise timeline to determine whether any factors could have influenced the final decision.

According to the documents, his mother and wife would have been ready to support him during any cooperation with the judiciary, a circumstance that makes it even more difficult to understand the abrupt change of perspective reconstructed by the investigators.

The DDA framework: "A stable presence within the organization"

While investigations into the thirty-five-year-old's death continue, the precautionary warrant that led to his arrest on July 7, signed by investigating judge Carla Sarno, devotes several pages to reconstructing the role that, according to the prosecution, Costantino Russo allegedly played within the criminal organization.

The DDA maintains that Russo had been involved in the clan's operations for years and had significant financial resources attributable to the assets accumulated by his father, Giuseppe Russo. According to the prosecution's reconstruction, he continued the activities traditionally attributed to the criminal group: clandestine collection of sports bets, management of amusement machines, money laundering, reinvestment of capital, and control of companies formally registered to front men. These allegations will be the subject of the subsequent trial.

The prosecution's case also describes an economic strategy based on the investment of capital in apparently legal businesses – including bars, betting shops, a clothing store, a swimming pool and a beach resort – which investigators believe were functional to reinvesting money of illicit origin and masking its origin.

Wealth and “inequality”

One of the central chapters of the ordinance concerns the reconstruction of assets.

DIA investigators compared declared income, bank balances, financial transactions, and assets accumulated between 2013 and 2023. This analysis, according to the information cited in the order, revealed a marked disproportion between the officially documented income and the financial status attributed to the suspect.

The documents state that the analysis was developed by also considering the proceeds that investigators believe are attributable to the alleged illegal activities, with the stated aim of representing the suspect's true financial capacity. This analysis led investigators to highlight a significant financial inconsistency through 2023. These conclusions are also part of the prosecution's hypothesis and will be examined at trial.

The villa, the Rolexes and that overheard conversation

Among the elements highlighted by investigators is the renovation of several properties donated in 2018 by maternal relatives. According to the reconstruction contained in the order, the buildings were affected by significant work.

This reconstruction also features some wiretaps. In a 2023 conversation with Domenico Iovine, the two discuss their passion for luxury watches.

«No, I keep them… then, for a period of time I sold them…»

When the interlocutor observes that he probably needed money, Russo replies:

"Well... I was just packing up at the time. Who cared about clocks?"

And yet:

"Some watches are now worth fifty thousand euros. They used to cost much less."

According to the DDA, those words represent a useful piece of the puzzle in explaining how the home renovations were financed. The defense will have the opportunity to challenge this interpretation during the proceedings.

The alleged role of "treasurer" of the family

Another chapter of the ordinance concerns the management of the family's economic resources.

The prosecution claims that Costantino Russo was the financial supporter of several relatives and those close to the clan. Bank transactions analyzed by investigators reveal transfers with reasons such as "grandchild support" or "sister-niece support," which, according to the DDA, served to disguise the true source of the money.

In a phone call dated October 21, 2022, cited in the warrant, investigators believe they can discern the central role attributed to Russo in managing the family's finances. Another recorded conversation with an aunt in January 2023 addresses the relatives' financial difficulties and the possible support Costantino could have provided. These elements also form part of the prosecution's reconstruction.

The questions that remain open

Investigators are focusing on reconstructing the prisoner's last days in prison, including phone calls, conversations, and any signs of distress. Among the aspects that need to be clarified are the methods used to monitor the prisoner.

Understanding whether there were omissions, errors of judgment, or whether the action was completely unforeseeable is one of the main objectives of the investigation.

For now, however, many questions remain unanswered.
