The Giugliano hospital where the 15-year-old is hospitalized
A dramatic traffic accident rocked the community of Calvizzano overnight, forcefully reviving the issue of driving safety and unauthorized driving. On Viale della Resistenza, a car driven by a 17-year-old boy spun out of control, triggering a series of violent impacts before overturning in the center of the road.
According to initial reconstructions carried out by the Carabinieri of the Marano mobile radio unit, the vehicle first violently impacted an Enel substation, and then ended up crashing into the gates and perimeter walls of several houses, also damaging several cars legally parked along the road.
Three minors were in the car: the 118-year-old driver was accompanied by his brother and a friend, both 15. Emergency medical services responded immediately.
The two brothers were transported to the emergency room of the hospital in Giugliano in Campania, with green and yellow codes respectively.
The 15-year-old friend suffered the most serious consequences: he was rescued and urgently transferred to the hospital in Pozzuoli, where he is currently in critical condition and has a guarded prognosis.
The car was seized by law enforcement, who are continuing their investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the crash and establish who is responsible for the incident. The minor driver (who was not allowed to drive) has also been subjected to all the necessary tests.
This morning, the Carabinieri will forward a report to the North Naples Prosecutor's Office, which will decide on the driver's position.
The Calvizzano incident is a compelling portrait of a social problem that cannot be stopped: the disregard of driving regulations by very young people. Getting behind the wheel at 17—without the maturity, experience, and, above all, the necessary driving license—is not a prank or mere recklessness, but an act of irresponsibility that turns a means of transportation into a potential explosive device.
For years, institutions, schools, and law enforcement agencies have promoted awareness campaigns, widespread checks, and meetings on road safety. However, the reality shows a worrying failure to heed these appeals.
There's a profound gap between the educational message and young people's perception of risk, often drawn by the illusion of invincibility or the pursuit of a low-cost thrill. When the calls of legality go unheeded, the outcome dramatically shifts from classrooms to intensive care wards.
To break this chain, sanctions or subsequent seizures alone are not enough: we need a more stringent educational pact that involves families first and foremost in daily monitoring and example.
