Rome: Elderly woman discovers scam and arrests 20-year-old woman from Naples with no criminal record

Rome – The voice on the phone was peremptory, his tone unhesitating. A self-styled Carabinieri Major delivered the most dramatic news: her daughter had been in trouble for a serious crime committed during the night, and to avoid repercussions, she needed to immediately hand over all the gold jewelry stored in the house, falsely labeled as the proceeds of a robbery. A classic emotional trap, designed to exploit fear and drive the victim into panic.

But the perpetrator of the scam hadn't taken into account the extraordinary lucidity of his victim, an 88-year-old woman living in the Piazza Mazzini area.

The trap is sprung on the phone

The incident occurred around 14:00 PM. Rather than succumb to anxiety or give in to the fake officer's threats, the woman kept her cool. She pretended to comply with the caller's requests, reassuring him that she would pack a bag with the valuables, but as soon as she had the opportunity, she alerted the emergency number 112.

The woman's report prompted a swift intervention by the Roma Trionfale Company. Carabinieri officers from the Operations Unit and the local station rushed to the Prati apartment and, in consultation with the owner, set up a surveillance and stakeout: some officers hid inside the home, while others guarded the building from the outside.

The collection and the immediate arrest

The story unfolded around 16:00 PM, when a twenty-year-old woman with no criminal record from Naples showed up at the door, sent by the criminal organization to collect the "loot."

As soon as the girl picked up the bag containing the jewelry, the Carabinieri emerged and stopped her on the landing before she could attempt to escape. The stolen goods were recovered in full and returned to the eighty-eight-year-old, who profusely thanked the officers.

Trial with fast-track procedure and conviction

Arrested in flagrante delicto on charges of aggravated fraud against the elderly, the young woman was taken to the courtroom in Piazzale Clodio. The Rome Court upheld the arrest and sentenced the twenty-year-old to one year and four months in prison, with a suspended sentence.
