Benevento, a frenzy at De Mita Park: a fight ends in gunfire, injuring a 27-year-old.

A summer evening turned into a nightmare in Benevento, where the line between a trivial argument and potential tragedy was blurred to the breaking point. Late on Thursday, August 27, Parco De Mita (in Piazzale Catullo)—a green space recently reopened to the public and a popular gathering place for families and young people—was the scene of a very serious episode of violence.

Outside Wikka Park, a popular venue within the park, a heated argument broke out between two local youths. Words quickly turned into action, but the altercation quickly escalated to weapons: one of the two opponents pulled out a pistol and fired several shots at chest height. One of the bullets struck a 27-year-old man from Benevento in the hand.

The explosion of gunfire sparked mass panic: hundreds of people, including many children playing nearby, fled for shelter. Emergency medical services responded immediately, transporting the victim to the San Pio Hospital (formerly Rummo) for treatment.

Fortunately, his condition is not serious. Patrols from the Benevento Police Headquarters' Flying Squad and forensic experts arrived on the scene to conduct the necessary tests. Investigators are now tracking the alleged attacker, identified as a 22-year-old man from Benevento, already known to law enforcement, who is currently being sought.

h3The crime alarm and the security issue in Benevento

The episode at De Mita Park isn't just a crime story, it's also a serious wake-up call for the entire Sannio community. Benevento, historically considered a haven, sheltered from the more ferocious criminal dynamics that characterize other areas of Campania, is now facing a disturbing escalation of urban violence.

What is disconcerting is not only the gesture itself, but the bold manner of action: The use of firearms in public places: Picking up a gun to settle a dispute and pulling the trigger in a park crowded with families reveals a dangerous loss of sense of limits and perception of the gravity of one's actions.

The youth drift: The young age of both the victim (27 years old) and the alleged aggressor (22 years old) reflects a subculture of violence that sees the gun as the only tool for asserting oneself or resolving conflicts.

The perception of insecurity: When places where children and young people gather and play become the scene of shootings, the city's social fabric is torn apart, undermining citizens' trust in the livability of public spaces.

The problem cannot be solved simply by increasing the police presence in the area—essential as it is for controlling nightlife and preventing crime—but requires concerted action. Joint action between institutions, schools, and families is needed to disarm an increasingly impulsive and aggressive youth crime scene, before the next "near-miss" turns into a true and irreparable tragedy.
