A night of violence at Benevento prison: 50 inmates trashed a ward and barricaded themselves in.

Tensions were high late yesterday evening inside the Benevento prison. Approximately 50 inmates on the fourth floor staged a violent protest, trashing the entire unit and causing extensive damage to the facilities before barricading themselves inside their rooms.

Vincenzo Palmieri, regional secretary of Osapp Campania, who was present on site with the union's president, Acampa, made the announcement.

The rescue operation and the negotiation

Faced with the emergency, the Regional Intervention Protocol was immediately implemented, which saw the timely dispatch of personnel and equipment to support the staff serving in the Sannio prison, which was numerically reduced compared to the severity of the unrest.

After hours of intense tension and lengthy and complex negotiations conducted by the institute's management and the authorities involved, the inmates—who openly rejected the prison system's rules—finally refrain from using force to avoid repercussions and more serious measures against them.

The alarm for the summer months

The union expresses serious concern about security in the coming months. The summer vacation plan, combined with the chronic staff shortage, risks severely straining Penitentiary Police officers, who are faced with increasingly frequent critical situations. For this reason, Osapp has already announced that it will formally request the administration's top management to urgently supplement the Benevento prison's staffing.
