Torre Annunziata, €3 million tender to design the redevelopment of the Spolettificio

A new step toward the rebirth of the historic former Spolette Military Establishment in Torre Annunziata. The Italian State Property Agency has announced a €2.933.508 tender for engineering and architectural services related to the restoration, conservation, and redevelopment of the portion of the complex that will be used by the Carabinieri.

Bids must be submitted by August 31st, thus launching the design phase of one of the most anticipated projects in the Vesuvian area, destined to breathe new life into one of the symbols of industrial archaeology in Southern Italy.

A historic site that tells the story of over two centuries of industry

The Spolettificio (Spolett Factory) is one of the most important industrial complexes in the history of the Kingdom of Naples. Founded in 1758 by order of Charles of Bourbon as the Royal Arms Factory, it became the main production facility for bladed weapons and firearms in the entire Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, designed with the contribution of architects such as Luigi Vanvitelli and Ferdinando Fuga. After the unification of Italy, the site was gradually converted into a military spolettificio (Spolett Factory), maintaining a strategic role in national war production for over a century.

The regeneration project of the entire complex

The project is part of a broader redevelopment program launched in 2023, when the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Culture, the State Property Agency, and the Municipality of Torre Annunziata signed a memorandum of understanding to transform the area into a new urban hub.

The plan aims to combine the preservation of historical memory with new public, cultural, and institutional functions, restoring to the city a heritage of approximately 80 square meters that has previously been only partially used.

Between security, culture and archaeology

According to the project plan updated in 2026, the area will be divided into different functions. The southern section will house the Legality Center, with the new headquarters of the Carabinieri and the Guardia di Finanza, while the northern section will be designated as the Urban Park of Culture, closely linked to the nearby archaeological site of Oplontis, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The project also includes museum spaces, archaeological warehouses, exhibition areas, a high-level training school for restoration, and visitor services for the Pompeii Archaeological Park, transforming the ancient Bourbon factory into a hub for culture, research, and tourism.

A strategic investment for Torre Annunziata

The tender published by the State Property Agency therefore represents the first concrete operational step toward a transformation destined to have significant urban and economic benefits. The redevelopment of the former Spolettificio aims not only to preserve an asset of extraordinary historical value, but also to strengthen the presence of institutions, revitalize the city center, and create a new connection between the city's monumental heritage and the tourist circuit of Pompeii and Oplontis.
