Campi Flegrei, a clash between Musumeci and the mayor of Bacoli: "We need answers, not promises."

Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci and Bacoli Mayor Josi Gerardo Della Ragione are at loggerheads over the handling of the emergency at Campi Flegrei. Following the minister's remarks in the Chamber of Deputies, the mayor took to social media to respond, asserting his right to demand concrete action for the earthquake-stricken area.

"Yes, Mr. Minister, you're right: I'm with the Pharisees. Because I'm mayor. Because I'm from Phlegraean Fields. I'm with the people, homeless and without water, who are waiting for urgent answers. No more promises, but facts," wrote Della Ragione.

The reference is to Musumeci's words during the parliamentary briefing, when the minister criticized the attitude of a mayor who, according to his reconstruction, had expressed appreciation for the government in Rome and then made accusations about the local area on local television.

A position that the mayor of Bacoli firmly rejected. "Something unprecedented is happening in the Chamber of Deputies. The Minister of Civil Protection, Nello Musumeci, has decided that his priority is not securing the Phlegraean Fields. Because, as he says, it's not an achievable goal. And that, in itself, is a serious matter," he declared.

Della Ragione then criticized the fact that the parliamentary debate included a personal attack on him. "He felt it necessary to invest time in Parliament to attack the mayor of Bacoli. Without cross-examination, head down. And with a lot of anger," he added.

The mayor asserted his role as representative of the citizens of the Phlegraean Fields and rejected the accusation of having taken prejudicial positions against the government. "He says I 'spit venom.' He confuses institutional respect with bowing. He says I 'side with the Pharisees.' It's incredible," he stated.

"Because I believe it has never happened in the history of the Republic that a member of the Italian government, in the midst of such a grave emergency, attacks a mayor of an area in crisis. The reason? Because I dare criticize the government's inaction," he continued.

The mayor finally reiterated his call for immediate action for the people of the Phlegraean Fields: "Give the people answers and keep your promises. This Republic is proudly a democracy. And never think that the Phlegraean Fields will settle for handouts. We want everything we deserve. We are Phlegraean Fields. And you will never break us."
