The water emergency that has affected the islands in the Gulf of Naples in recent hours has reached the Prefecture's desk. This morning, Prefect Michele di Bari called an urgent meeting at the Palazzo del Governo to review the situation following the power outage at the Mugnano water pumping station, a strategic facility for water distribution to Ischia and Procida.
Representatives of the Campania Region, the Municipality of Marano di Napoli, Enel e-distribuzione, the Fire Brigade, and the ASL Napoli 2 Nord took part in the summit.
During the meeting, Enel e-distribuzione technicians explained that the outage was caused by two separate electrical system faults, which compromised the operation of the Marano di Napoli pumping station, resulting in a drastic reduction in the water flow to the islands.
According to the company, the first fault is being resolved and should be resolved within about an hour and a half. The second repair is estimated to take about four hours.
The Campania Region reassured those present, explaining that once full power is restored, water distribution will quickly return to normal levels, allowing the emergency to be overcome without further problems.
Particular attention was paid to the maintenance of the islands' health facilities.
The ASL Napoli 2 Nord has reported that the hospitals on the island of Ischia have enough water to last approximately twelve hours, while the hospital on Procida can count on an estimated autonomy of seven hours.
While considering these margins compatible with the expected repair times, the Prefecture, the Campania Region, and the Fire Brigade have prepared an emergency plan to guarantee, if necessary, an alternative water supply to healthcare facilities, thus ensuring the continuity of healthcare services until a full return to normality.
