Sorrento, Lupin's shirt doesn't bring good luck: e-bike thieves caught on camera and arrested on the train

Sorrento – He wore a Lupin III jersey, almost as if it were a declaration of intent or a defiant wink. But the reality proved far different from the famous cartoon: no brilliant strokes to celebrate, no romantic chase, and no "Inspector Zenigata" ready to surrender with good-natured resignation.

For a pair of thieves who turned into a clumsy emulation of the Japanese cartoon, the robbery ended in the worst possible way: with handcuffs on their wrists.

Theft in the crowded alleys

The robbery took place in the early afternoon in the heart of Sorrento's historic center. Around 15:00 PM, a 37-year-old man from Avellino, armed with a pair of shears hidden in his clothing, cut the chain off an e-bike parked in a narrow street. A 22-year-old woman from Solofra stood beside him, acting as a lookout to prevent any unforeseen incidents.

After the first theft, the man rode off on the stolen green bicycle, while his accomplice followed on foot, trying to blend in with the crowd of tourists crowding the alleys. Shortly thereafter, the pair also managed to steal a second electric bicycle.

The manhunt on the rails

The two had not taken into account either the video surveillance cameras of a local establishment, nor the prompt action of the Carabinieri of the Sorrento station, who were immediately alerted by the owner of the vehicle.

Assuming the couple was attempting to return to the Naples area, the officers rushed to the Circumvesuviana station. Their hunch proved correct: the two had just boarded the 15:26 PM train, carrying their two e-bikes. A coordinated search was launched on the rails, managed in real time by EAV personnel.

Intercepted and handcuffed in Torre Annunziata

The train escape lasted only a handful of stops. At the Torre Annunziata station, Carabinieri officers from the Mobile Radio Unit boarded the train, identifying and apprehending the two fugitives among the stunned passengers.

Faced with the evidence, the man and woman admitted their guilt. Subsequent investigations revealed that both were already well known to law enforcement for similar crimes committed in recent months between the Sorrento Peninsula and the Torre del Greco area.

The 37-year-old man wearing the Lupin shirt and the 22-year-old woman (who bears a decidedly unremarkable resemblance to the charming Margot from the animated series) were arrested on charges of aggravated theft. Their cases are now being examined by the Torre Annunziata Court for a fast-track trial.

The Sorrento Peninsula is a favorite destination for e-bike thieves.

The Sorrento Peninsula represents a veritable "ideal habitat" for e-bike thefts. The criminals' choice is not random, but reflects a unique combination of geographic, socioeconomic, and logistical factors that make this area particularly attractive to predatory crime.

Density of high-value vehicles: Sorrento and its surrounding municipalities thrive on international tourism and increasingly sustainable mobility. The concentration of e-bikes—both owned by residents and, especially, rented to tourists—is extremely high. These vehicles have a high market value (often between €1.500 and €4.000) and are easily sold on the black market or through online receiving channels.

Urban morphology and tourist crowds: The historic centers of the Italian peninsula are characterized by narrow alleys, pedestrian zones, and a constant flow of people. On the one hand, the crowds offer cover to the thief—who can easily blend in while studying the target or using burglary tools—and on the other, they force e-bikes to be parked on the street or outside businesses and accommodations, not always with suitable anchoring systems.

Distraction factor: Tourists naturally tend to be less attentive to the safety of their belongings. A flimsy chain or a flimsy lock can make a bicycle easy prey for those armed with shears or bolt cutters.

Connections and escape route logistics: The Italian peninsula is closely connected to the Naples metropolitan area and the Nocera-Sarnese countryside via a comprehensive but often overcrowded transportation network. The presence of the Circumvesuviana railway line and major roads allows criminals to quickly "hit and run," hoping to blend in with commuters before the alarm is raised.
