Mascagna Park in Naples, between redevelopment and degradation: the neighborhood demands answers.

Naples – Nearly two years after the reopening of Mascagna Park, following a €600 redevelopment project, the situation hasn't changed as promised. The Valori Collinari Committee is once again denouncing the persistent degradation of the only accessible green space between the Vomero and Arenella neighborhoods. Newly planted trees are already dead, the flowerbeds are barren, and the playground equipment, exposed to the sun on dusty ground without adequate protection, poses a safety risk to children.

Gennaro Capodanno, president of the Committee and former president of the Vomero district, has long led the residents' campaign, which includes petitions, sit-ins, and press releases. He also previously launched an online petition that collected 850 signatures, calling for the resignation of Vincenzo Santagada, the City of Naples's Councilor for Green Spaces.

Capodanno harshly criticizes the administration led by Mayor Gaetano Manfredi and Councilor Santagada for their lack of effective responses to the issues raised. "Enough with triumphalistic press releases and window-dressing," he states. "Citizens want concrete and immediate action. Why, after such a huge investment in an area of ​​just 12 square meters, is the park still lacking shade, maintenance, and safety, especially in the playgrounds?"

The Mascagna case thus becomes a question of institutional credibility, with the committee requesting an urgent inspection with the participation of local associations and committees to assess the condition of the greenery and play facilities and to plan restoration and safety interventions.

"Citizens don't need slogans or ritual photos," Capodanno concludes. "They want a safe, accessible park. Until concrete answers arrive, Mascagna Park will remain a symbol of a broken promise, especially to the detriment of the neighborhood's children."
