Mondragone, an illegal landfill site just steps from the sea: an area containing asbestos and illegal fishing traps has been seized.

Mondragone – Operations to combat environmental crime in the province of Caserta continue unabated. At the direction of President Anacleto Colombiano, law enforcement has intensified patrols along the coast, with a particular focus on protecting public health and ensuring safety during the beach season.

The shocking discovery in Levagnole

During one of these operations, officers from the Caserta Provincial Police, in collaboration with the Mondragone Coast Guard, identified an area in the Levagnole area used as an illegal landfill, located a short distance from the shoreline and popular bathing areas. Various debris was found on site, including asbestos sheets, a wrecked pedal boat, and approximately 50 traps used for illegal fishing.

Danger to swimmers and the environment

The presence of potentially hazardous materials just a few meters from the sea and near areas frequented by families and children is particularly serious. Given the deterioration and the risk to public health, the area—extending approximately 300 square meters—has been seized and handed over to the Municipality of Mondragone for remediation.

Coordination and ongoing investigations

The operation was conducted under the coordination of Commanders Biagio Chiariello (Provincial Police) and Alfonso D'Amodio (Mondragone Coast Guard). Investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible for the abandonment. The Public Prosecutor's Office at the Court of Santa Maria Capua Vetere has been notified of the incident, charged with the alleged crimes of waste abandonment and illegal occupation.

The checks continue

Checks along the Caserta coastline will continue in the coming weeks, as part of the Province of Caserta's efforts to prevent and combat environmental crime. The aim is to ensure the safety and health of the beaches throughout the summer season.
