Naples: 13-year-old child fraudster recruited by mafia clans

Naples – A father in prison, a distant mother, and a childhood ruined before he was even born. At just 13—an age when one once divided one's time between school and play—a boy from the Neapolitan area found himself a pawn for organized crime.

He's not legally accountable, but for those who run the criminal hubs, he represents the perfect "goods": invisible, open to blackmail, and expendable. A bitter story where the distinction between perpetrator and victim becomes blurred, leaving only profound sadness.

The "fake policeman" trap

The scene of the incident is the island of Procida, usually a haven of tranquility, rocked in recent days by a wave of attempted scams targeting the elderly. The scheme is tried and true, and ruthless. The phone rings, and on the other end, a peremptory voice recites the script: "Madam, we are the Carabinieri. A bank has just been robbed, and the security cameras show your car. To prove your innocence, you must have your jewelry analyzed by our operator to verify that it is not the stolen jewelry."

Thanks to prevention campaigns promoted by law enforcement, many citizens took notice and reported the attempts. But the merciless law of large numbers ended up claiming a victim.

The backpack of discord

While patrolling the island's streets for suspicious activity, the Carabinieri from the local station noticed a lone child. There were no initial suspicions, just the human concern that a child had gotten lost. When the officers approached, the 13-year-old appeared shy, avoided their gaze, and whispered that he was waiting for a taxi, refusing to explain where his parents were.

What gives him away is the contents of his backpack: inside are €1.550 in cash and several gold objects. The boy doesn't shed a tear, doesn't utter a word. The adult gaze set in that angelic face is a vivid image of a stolen childhood.

The military quickly traced the victim, an 83-year-old woman who, driven by fear and naivety, had handed over her belongings to someone who, given his age, could have been her grandson.

A compromised family context

Once the stolen goods were recovered and returned, the most complex chapter opened for the Carabinieri: custody of the minor. The family picture that emerged from the investigations was bleak: the father was in prison, the parents were separated, and the couple shared a life in Naples with their grandmother and younger sister. The mother, located only after extensive searches, was on vacation in Terracina.

Ultimately, the boy was returned to his traced family. The Naples Juvenile Prosecutor's Office was informed of the incident, which will assess the adoption of appropriate social protection and guardianship measures for the 13-year-old.

The cracks in society

The case demonstrates how the networks of criminal organizations on the mainland (particularly in the capital, Naples) are now spreading everywhere, exploiting the islands not only as tourist destinations but also as temporary "free zones" for hit-and-run scams. The decision to employ a 13-year-old child reveals a strategy as ruthless as it is pragmatic: a minor who cannot be arrested guarantees almost zero criminal risk for the recruiters, while his innocent appearance facilitates intrusions into the homes of the elderly.

The real tragedy that emerges is not just the crime itself, but the complete failure of the primary social safety net. When a 13-year-old child develops the emotional coldness of a deviant adult—the lack of crying, the silence, the hardened gaze—it means that society, schools, and institutions have arrived too late, allowing the criminal subculture to fill the void left by broken families. Procida thus becomes the mirror of an open wound in the entire Neapolitan hinterland: the urgency to rescue the very young from a destiny that seems already written before they even have the chance to choose who they will become.
