Naples, gunfire in the historic center: Via San Sebastiano closed tomorrow

Naples – Approximately three weeks after the shooting that rocked the heart of Naples' historic center, Via San Sebastiano is once again under lockdown. The City of Naples has ordered a traffic ban along the entire thoroughfare starting at 07:00 a.m. tomorrow, Wednesday, August 19, 2026, until the end of the operation.

The order, issued at the request of the Police Headquarters, will allow the Scientific Police Service from Rome and the local GIPS officers to conduct surveys and technical investigations essential to accurately reconstruct the dynamics of the events.

The Wild West at the end of July

The incident dates back to the night of July 25, 2026, when a series of gunshots amidst the crowds at the nightlife transformed the area near Via Port'Alba into a theater of terror. The shots, aimed at chest height, injured a young man and sparked panic among hundreds of passersby, once again highlighting the issue of safety in the city's central areas.

The arrests and confessions

The Flying Squad's investigation, coordinated by the Public Prosecutor's Office, quickly led to the identification and arrest of the two alleged perpetrators, Giuseppe Muscariello and Vincenzo Rubino. Tracked down and arrested on charges of aggravated assault, illegal possession of a weapon, and receiving stolen goods, the two individuals involved in the incident were subjected to preliminary questioning.

During their confrontations with the magistrates, both made partial admissions, confirming their presence at the scene of the ambush and admitting direct involvement in the fight that later erupted into bloodshed, while attempting to downplay their respective roles and punitive intentions.

Hunting for technical feedback

The closure of Via San Sebastiano to traffic is now necessary to cross-reference the suspects' versions with the available evidence. Forensic experts from Rome's forensic department will conduct bullet trajectory simulations, laser scanning, and surface inspections to locate additional ballistic and blood traces, ultimately closing the loop on those responsible for that night.
