The Napoli players celebrate the 2-0 lead
Max Allegri's new Napoli side started with a tough and hard-fought victory. At the Ferraris stadium, the Azzurri defeated Genoa 2-0 in a game that remained tied until the final minutes. Substitutes Kevin De Bruyne and Vergara decided the match, both key players in a final that rewarded the Neapolitan side.
A victory built primarily on the bench, but also through Napoli's ability to hold firm in the most difficult moments. Genoa, in fact, played with greater intensity for much of the match, only to pay dearly for their physical decline and inaccuracy in front of goal.
Genoa more aggressive, Napoli in difficulty
The first half was dominated by the Rossoblu. Genoa started strong and immediately put Napoli under pressure, who struggled to build from the back and find space.
The first chance came from a mistake by Meret during the build-up phase: the Italian goalkeeper cleared the ball to Vitinha and then had to make up for it with a great save from the Genoa striker.
In the 21st minute, Baldanzi threatened with a volley into the box, which was saved by Marin. The playmaker tried again in the 37th minute, taking advantage of Napoli's lapse in possession.
The Azzurri, however, only managed to improve towards the end of the half. Among the most lively was Alisson, who almost scored with a shot that went just wide of the net.
In the second half, Napoli attempted to raise their game, while Genoa gradually lost intensity. Allegri's team, however, continued to struggle to create truly dangerous chances.
The tactical turning point came in the 66th minute: the Italian coach brought on Lang, De Bruyne and
Genoa had another great chance in the 79th minute, when substitute Sow launched a counterattack, but his shot went high. It was the episode that preceded the turnaround.
Two minutes later, Napoli struck. In the 82nd minute, Vergara created a fine back-heel pass and set up De Bruyne inside the box: the Belgian made no mistake and made it 0-1.
The goal sparked protests from Genoa. The home team protested De Bruyne's challenge on Vasquez, deeming the midfielder's shoulder charge in the move that led to the goal a foul. Referee Di Bello, however, allowed the goal.
Genoa tries to respond, but their energy is running low. And Napoli takes advantage again.
The second goal came in the 87th minute. This time, Vergara added his name to the scoresheet, sealing the match.
Napoli thus took home three precious points in a far from easy match. The 2-0 win at the Ferraris reflects a team still building, but capable of struggling, waiting, and finding the decisive weapon in substitutions.
Allegri, therefore, has earned three points from his league debut. Genoa are left with the disappointment of a generous and long-convincing performance, which was ultimately undermined by incidents and a lack of clarity in front of goal.
The new Napoli starts like this: suffering, changing face in the second half and striking at the decisive moment.
