A photo from a few years ago of Pietro Puzone
Acerra – A new, dramatic chapter has begun in the life of Pietro Puzone, the acrobatic former Napoli Primavera player who helped lead the club to its historic first Scudetto. At 63, the former athlete was rushed to the I Fiori clinic in Acerra yesterday morning.
Puzone was found lying on the ground at number 59 of Corso Garibaldi, the very central street—the bench that had been his home for weeks—with a bloody face and stab wounds to his upper limbs, the causes of which remain unclear.
The alarm was raised and the rescue team mobilized by environmentalist Alessandro Cannavacciuolo (author of a post with a photo-denunciation that went viral), several residents, and the social services activated by Mayor Tito D'Errico. His condition is currently not life-threatening, but remains serious due to his heavy alcohol addiction and severe psychological debilitation.
The publication of the photo of Puzone in desperate conditions has sparked intense online debate: while many users have called for respect and protection of privacy, many have emphasized how that very photo prevented the worst from happening, mobilizing the timely assistance of 118.
Meanwhile, a veritable chain of solidarity has gathered around the former footballer. In addition to the support of friends and residents ready to form a team of volunteers, former longtime fan leader Gennaro Montuori ("Palummella") announced the launch of a support network through his television show.
The critical situation has prompted local institutions to consider radical interventions. Mayor Tito D'Errico, a middle school classmate of Puzone's, highlighted the need for drastic but now unavoidable action:
"Last week, social services intervened, but Puzone refused assistance. I believe that at this point, in consultation with the family, we need to initiate a coercive legal and social-healthcare process, with the support of the judiciary, to prevent a tragic outcome."
A complex but necessary journey to offer Pietro a concrete hope of rebirth, after years spent oscillating between fleeting moments of normality and painful relapses into the abyss of the streets.
