Canadair in action
Naples – A large fire broke out this afternoon in eastern Naples, bringing the Poggioreale area back to the center of an emergency that appears to have no definitive solution. The flames developed on the side of Via Santa Maria del Pianto, near the Roma camp on Via del Campo.
A dense, towering column of black smoke quickly rose into the sky, visible for several kilometers and making the air unbreathable in several neighborhoods of the city.
According to initial reports, the fire involved large quantities of waste and household items that had been piled up indiscriminately in the area. The nature of the burned materials—plastic, textile scraps, and bulky waste—fueled the smoke, transforming the area into a veritable open-air ecological bomb. The speed with which the fire spread necessitated the immediate dispatch of emergency teams.
To stem the fire's advance, two firefighting teams, specifically assigned to the "Terra dei Fuochi" (Land of Fires) operation, intervened. Given the scale of the fire and the difficulty of reaching certain critical points from the ground, the operations room also ordered the deployment of a Canadair, which performed several water drops to contain the fires and prevent the blaze from spreading further.
What makes this episode even more serious is its tragic systematic nature. The area of Via Santa Maria del Pianto and the surrounding lands in Poggioreale are no strangers to similar events: in recent years, the area has been the scene of repeated waste fires, despite periodic announcements of cleanup, the removal of illegal dumping, and proclamations of strengthened territorial controls.
The new fire demonstrates how the preventative measures adopted thus far have not been sufficient to eradicate the practice of illegal dumping, nor to permanently secure a perimeter constantly exposed to the risk of toxic fires. While extinguishing and securing operations continue, anger is growing among residents over an environmental and health emergency that continues to recur.
