Instead of the traditional sfogliatelle, the Municipality of Portici distributed watermelon and cherries along the beaches, renewing a twenty-year tradition in preparation for Ferragosto.

Portici anticipates Ferragosto with watermelon and cherries for beachgoers.
In Portici, in the province of Naples, the traditional Ferragosto holiday has been brought forward to August 14th with a tasty and refreshing treat for beachgoers. Instead of the usual sfogliatelle, distributed for the past twenty years, the town has chosen to offer slices of watermelon and cherries along the town's shoreline.
The initiative, called "Waiting for Ferragosto," took place in various seaside resorts, from Parco a Mare to the beaches of Mortelle, Cirotto, and Lido Rex.
Mayor Claudio Teodonno personally oversaw the distribution, emphasizing the intention to maintain continuity with tradition while introducing a fresher, seasonal product. The choice was met with interest by beachgoers, although some expressed a certain nostalgia for the classic dessert.
The initiative saw the active participation of the city administration, including Councilors Angela Gentile and Florinda Verde and Francesco Portoghese. The support of the Municipal Police, the Red Cross, and the Port Authority was crucial, collaborating to ensure efficient and safe distribution.
Organized by the Municipality in collaboration with the Co.Re. Consortium, the Vesuvian Community Network, and produced by Dabliu Bistrò, the event represents a moment of closeness and sharing with citizens, keeping alive a tradition that has lasted two decades, albeit with a touch of innovation.
