Salerno – Joint checks by the Municipal Police and the Local Health Authority (ASL) following a report from a foreign tourist. A hostel located in the historic center was targeted, inspected by officers from the Food and Agriculture Police Unit following a report from a foreign tourist.
During the inspection, sanitation deficiencies and overcrowding were discovered. The facility, according to findings, was authorized to accommodate up to 24 people, but had been expanded to provide 66 beds.
The excess beds found therefore amount to 42. The spaces were apparently built and used without the necessary permits and the required fire prevention certification.
At the time of the inspection, there were 27 guests in the hostel, mostly young foreign tourists.
To ensure the safety of those present, the Municipal Police and Local Health Authority (ASL) ordered the immediate suspension of operations and a ban on new check-ins. Guests were required to relocate to other accommodations within 24 hours.
The requirements also include the disinfection of the premises and the permanent removal of beds deemed illegal.
The hostel owner was fined a total of €5.666,67 and reported to the judicial authorities for alleged violations of fire safety regulations.
Further checks will be carried out in the coming days to ensure compliance with the requirements issued by the relevant authorities.
