Fuorni prison continues to face a serious emergency. This was reported by Samuele Ciambriello, the Campania Region's inmate ombudsman, who, at the end of his visit to the Salerno prison, painted a worrying picture: 572 inmates confined in a facility designed to house just 370, with an overcrowding rate of 154,6%.
This condition, according to the Ombudsman, severely impacts the quality of life of inmates and further complicates the daily work of prison police and healthcare personnel. The high number of inmates with addiction problems also weighs heavily: 173, or 30,2% of the inmate population. Of these, approximately thirty are in the third section, dedicated to advanced treatment, while in recent months, some have been transferred to the ICATT in Eboli or to therapeutic communities.
Critical issues also exist in the women's ward, where 52 women are incarcerated, experiencing the same challenges related to the space and conditions of the facility. "The organization and treatment planning are evident, with numerous activities, training courses, and volunteer projects planned. However, the facility is overall dilapidated and in need of urgent intervention: there are widespread mold and humidity problems throughout the interior, while the complex housing the 31 inmates on day release needs a proper renovation," Ciambriello stated.
There is, however, a positive sign on the investment front. "The management informed me of the arrival of €4,5 million in ministerial funding, primarily earmarked for renovations to the first section, spread across three floors and providing housing for approximately 350 inmates," the guarantor added.
The visit then continued to the San Paolo cooperative in Pontecagnano, where Ciambriello met six inmates enrolled in a social inclusion project funded by the Campania Region and Cassa Ammende. Finally, he attended a theatrical performance performed by ten inmates from the Eboli ICATT, an initiative aimed at promoting social reintegration through cultural and educational activities.
