Torre Annunziata: Court approves assisted suicide for woman with ALS

The Torre Annunziata court has issued an order requiring healthcare providers to complete the necessary procedures to allow a woman with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) access to physician-assisted suicide. The decision follows an appeal filed by the patient, represented by attorney Filomena Gallo and supported by the Luca Coscioni Association.

During the hearing, the woman confirmed her wishes to the judge through an eye-pointer, emphasizing the need to avoid further delays. The court recognized that the lack of a clear timeline would compromise the patient's rights, given the severity and irreversible progression of her disease.

The order stipulates that the North West Tuscany Local Health Authority must deliver a self-administration device previously used in a previous case within seven working days of August 29, and that all costs will be borne by the health authority. A new hearing has also been scheduled for September 24, 2026, to verify the effective implementation of the order.

Attorney Gallo emphasized the importance of the provision, which translates the recognition of the patient's requirements into concrete obligations and precise deadlines, condemning the protracted administrative obstacles that have thus far prevented the exercise of a choice already legitimized by law. The hope is that the provisions will be implemented without further delay, respecting the woman's wishes and dignity.
