Airola fire: Prosecutor's Office seizes area and opens investigation

Airola – The fire that broke out on August 31st in the industrial area of ​​Airola, in the Benevento province, is now entering the judicial system. This large-scale blaze affected the waste disposal site and required days of work by the teams involved in extinguishing it.

An emergency that, even after several days, still cannot be considered completely over. Yesterday, the wind helped rekindle some remaining embers, causing the resumption of fires within the area already affected by the flames.

Given the seriousness of the incident, the Benevento Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation and ordered the seizure of the area affected by the fire.

The issue of the seizure: no delays in securing the facility

One of the aspects on which the Prosecutor's Office wanted to clarify concerns the seizure of the area.

The measure, the magistrates explain, neither impedes nor slows down the necessary interventions to address the emergency. The judicial authorities' role is to determine any criminal liability, but they do not have the power to directly order the implementation of safety measures.

Even in the event of seizure, however, the necessary activities may be carried out with prior authorization from the judicial authority.

Residual waste and environmental controls

The issue now is twofold: on the one hand, the investigation to determine what caused the fire and whether anyone is responsible; on the other, the need to permanently secure the site.

The Prosecutor's Office assures that the criminal proceedings will "in no way" affect the monitoring of the area, the management of residual waste, and the safety measures taken on the site and surrounding areas.

The judicial office has also guaranteed its full cooperation in immediately examining and authorizing the requests for intervention submitted by the entitled parties.
