Waste burning returns to Airola

Airola - Flames are once again spreading fearfully in the industrial area of ​​Airola. New fires have broken out inside the Eco Energy plant, the waste treatment company placed under judicial administration for several years and already the scene, less than two weeks ago, of a large fire that devastated the entire Caudina Valley and parts of the provinces of Benevento, Caserta, and Avellino.

According to initial reports, the rekindling of the flames is thought to be linked to the strong winds that swept through the area yesterday, rekindling embers and still-hot materials beneath the rubble of the partially collapsed warehouse. Firefighters immediately responded to the scene, engaged in the delicate operations of clearing, clearing, and extinguishing the new outbreaks.

The facility, located in the PIP area on Via Caracciano, has been under precautionary seizure since April 2024 for illegal waste management, after being placed under judicial administration in January 2022 as part of an investigation into money laundering and permit violations. Despite the measures, storage operations have continued under judicial supervision, as confirmed by the facility's owners.

The fire on August 31st had already affected approximately 26 square meters of surface area, with over a million cubic meters of combustible material including plastic, baled paper, and tires, generating a dense toxic cloud and dioxin levels exceeding reference limits in the first 24 hours.

In those days, the firefighting operations had been made complicated by structural collapses and the need to use hydrant robots and special vehicles from the GOS unit.
On the institutional front, the Airola case has reached Parliament with questions and complaints demanding truth, inspections, and cleanup, while the Municipality has filed a complaint with the Public Prosecutor's Office and requested a state of emergency. Meanwhile, the population continues to monitor the situation, amid protests and calls for greater transparency regarding environmental and health risks.
