Buffalo milk: enhanced controls in Campania to trace the supply chain and protect consumers.

The Prefect of Naples, Michele di Bari, announced that, following the meeting of the Provincial Committee for Public Order and Safety held on September 22, increased controls have been ordered along the buffalo milk and dairy product supply chain.

The action involves the Carabinieri—including specialized units—and the Guardia di Finanza, operating in accordance with Law No. 75 of 2026, which introduces sanctions to protect Italian food products.

Specifically, the controls aim to verify the entire production chain: from farms and processors to intermediaries, all the way through the flow of buffalo milk destined for packaging. The goal is to ensure complete traceability from raw materials to the finished product, employing drastic measures to combat fraud and in line with Campania regional regulation no. 3/2005, which mandates targeted checks on the supply chain and processing companies, including morphological, chemical-physical, and microbiological aspects, during production and marketing.

The Prefect emphasized that rigorous controls on the buffalo milk supply chain are the only effective guarantee of consumer safety, certifying the authenticity of excellent DOP products, and protecting honest producers from food fraud.

Monitoring every step—from the health of the buffalo on the farm to the packaging of the final product—allows us to secure traceability and prevent milk of uncertain origin or foreign semi-finished products from being passed off as local raw materials.

This way, we aim to offer consumers the certainty of purchasing a safe, healthy food with distinctive organoleptic properties, as well as strengthening the trust of companies that invest in animal welfare and compliance.
