From an abandoned building to a sports center: in Casalnuovo di Napoli, Illumina is born, a playground that aims to include and unite the community through sport. The inauguration was attended by institutional representatives and young athletes.

Casalnuovo lights up the community: the first Sport Illumina is born in Campania.
A new hub for socializing and physical activity has opened in Casalnuovo di Napoli: an old space, a formerly abandoned preschool, has been renovated and transformed into a playground hosting basketball, climbing, and activities by local sports clubs. This is the first project in Campania under the Sport Illumina project, a government initiative aimed at transforming neglected spaces into open, inclusive, and free spaces for the entire community.
The inauguration was attended by institutional figures and sports figures: Minister for Sport and Youth Andrea Abodi, Mayor of Casalnuovo di Napoli Giovanni Nappi, President of Sport and Health Marco Mezzaroma, CEO Diego Nepi Molineris, and Pino Maddaloni, Team Illumina ambassador. The symbolic opening gesture was a basketball hoop, the first of many, confirming the project's guiding principle: to light up places and transform them into growth opportunities for young people and families.
Sport Illumina isn't limited to the physical aspect: it's an urban regeneration strategy aimed at creating community centers, where relationships and daily social life are shaped through sporting activity. Minister Abodi emphasized that the goal is to provide free sports spaces to those who need them most, helping to combat loneliness and marginalization. According to program data, of the 1.543 playgrounds created throughout Italy, 1.495 are already operational, 338 of which are in Campania and 20 in the province of Naples.
Caivano is cited as a prime example of rebirth: from a "horror setting" to a place of life and lawfulness, with a sports center dedicated to Pino Daniele and other redeveloped spaces. The Casalnuovo project is part of this line of intervention aimed at local communities, even in areas with fewer than 10 inhabitants, to bring sport where it is needed.
The day witnessed the active participation of young people and amateur sports associations, who have animated the new space since its inauguration. The vision is clear: Illumina is much more than a renovation; it is a social transformation that makes a neighborhood a hub, where sports becomes inclusion, education, and daily opportunities.
The joint statement by the government and sports organizations emphasizes the desire to use sport as a lever for development and cohesion, in a context also connected to international projects such as the America's Cup Naples 2027. For the young people of Casalnuovo, therefore, the space is now "theirs": a shared home where they can care for the common good and build a future and trust.
The message is clear: lighting means opening doors, not just extinguishing darkness. Casalnuovo lights up, and with it, an entire movement that seeks to demonstrate that sport, when accessible and inclusive, can transform marginalized places into places of life and participation.
