Pompeii, a 66-year-old man from Castellammare dies after being hit on the crosswalk. The hit-and-run driver has been identified.

Castellammare – A walk with her husband turned tragic. She was crossing the street at a pedestrian crossing when a car struck her, violently throwing her onto the pavement. According to investigators, the driver didn't stop and continued on his way.

The 66-year-old woman from Castellammare di Stabia, seriously injured in the accident that occurred the other evening on Via Plinio in Pompeii, died in hospital.

The 66-year-old's condition immediately appeared desperate. Transported to the Ospedale del Mare, she died from the very serious injuries sustained on impact.

The impact on pedestrian crossings

According to initial reconstructions, the woman was crossing the road with her husband. The man was a few steps ahead when the car approached.

The car apparently struck the woman just as she was at the crosswalk, striking her with extreme force. The 66-year-old was thrown to the ground, suffering fatal injuries.

Her husband reportedly witnessed the dramatic scene. The driver, however, did not stop after the impact to check on the woman or provide assistance.

The alarm was raised immediately. Emergency medical services arrived on the scene, providing first aid to the injured man and arranging for his emergency transfer to the hospital.

The escape caught on camera

The images from the video surveillance systems in the area may have provided a turning point in the investigation.

Investigators from the Pompeii Judicial Police Department, led by Deputy Police Commissioner Giuseppe Nicotera, acquired and analyzed the recordings. The cameras allowed them to reconstruct the sequence of the collision and, more importantly, the car's movements after the impact.

The hunt for the driver who left the scene of the accident without stopping has thus begun.

The car was left two kilometers from home

On the evening of September 15, investigators reportedly identified a man believed to be connected to the car.

According to the investigation, after the accident, the car was left about two kilometers from the man's home. From there, the alleged driver continued on foot to his home.

Investigators are evaluating this detail along with other evidence gathered during the investigation. The car, moreover, appears to have been registered to the man's father, who has since passed away.

Bodywork damage - The damage found on the car also strengthens investigators' suspicions.

In particular, marks were found on the bonnet and windshield of the car's bodywork, which were initially considered consistent with a violent collision.

However, technical investigations will determine whether the damage is actually attributable to the impact with the 66-year-old woman and will clarify the details of the accident. The car and other evidence acquired are now being examined by the judicial authorities.
