Protests against waste disposal sites in the Pianura area: "Via Picasso was the wrong choice."

Protests in Pianura over waste management and the sites designated for the storage and processing of materials managed by Asia Napoli continue. Residents in the neighborhood continue to experience disruption, while protests are growing against the project promoted by Palazzo San Giacomo and the Ninth Municipality to build a new transhipment site on Via Pablo Picasso.

The choice of site also raises further concerns. The land identified for the new facility is, in fact, where, according to the protesters, the municipal sports hall was supposed to be built for years, a facility long-awaited by the neighborhood as a space dedicated to sports and socializing.

Meanwhile, since the early hours of the morning, the recycling center on Via Nelson Mandela has seen long lines at the entrance. Trucks and vans, mostly commercial, lined up to drop off bulky and hazardous waste, severely disrupting traffic along one of the arteries parallel to Via Picasso, in the former Polo Artigianale area.

The situation was denounced by Pasquale Strazzullo, former city councilor and president of the "Territorio in Guardia" association, which has long been committed to environmental, safety, and legal issues in the neighborhood. Strazzullo also recalled previous legal actions that, following his complaints, had led to two seizures of the waste disposal site on Via Mandela.

"It's completely absurd and unreasonable to continue to place these types of structures 'out in the open' near residential areas and commercial businesses," Strazzullo states. "Citizens are forced to endure daily noise pollution, environmental impact, traffic jams, and a general incentive for urban decay."

The association also questions the effectiveness of the currently operating facilities. "Moreover, these facilities have never demonstrated any real effectiveness: the streets of Pianura continue to be constantly overflowing with abandoned bulky waste," Strazzullo continues.

Hence the protest against the new project on Via Picasso: "Fighting against the new structure on Via Picasso is a duty, even if the institutions' reaction is dramatically delayed compared to the needs of the area."

The protest thus brings waste management back to the forefront of the debate in Pianura, including traffic, impact on residents, and the future of the designated plant spaces. The new transfer site remains hotly contested by some in the area, while disruptions in the Via Mandela area are further fueling tensions.
