Road safety in the Naples area: targeted speed cameras

Yesterday afternoon, the Prefecture of Naples convened a meeting of the Observatory for Monitoring and Planning Road Accident Responses, focusing on an update on the investigations into the use of speed detection devices without immediate challenge. Prefect Michele di Bari chaired the meeting at the Government Palace.

Representatives of the municipalities of Ischia, Camposano, Gragnano, Pozzuoli, Somma Vesuviana, and Tufino attended the meeting, along with law enforcement officers, the Head of the Highway Police Department, and representatives of ANAS and the Metropolitan City.

In line with previous activities, the status of investigations into the use of speed cameras without immediate objection was reviewed, placing the issue within the framework of the activities coordinated by the Prefect. The regulatory framework was also reviewed, citing the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport Decree of June 8, regarding the approval, calibration, and functionality checks of the devices, as well as the prefectural circulars distributed to road owners and managers in July and August.

The reconnaissance of additional roads for speed camera installation has begun and is ongoing, with a particular focus on the island of Ischia. Furthermore, yesterday morning, the Traffic Police began extraordinary enforcement operations on the island, mandated by the Provincial Committee for Public Order and Safety on September 22nd. These checks will continue in the coming weeks, including evening and nighttime operations.

Those present illustrated local initiatives aimed at improving road safety, including through alternatives to speed cameras, such as raised pedestrian crossings, traffic lights, as well as the replacement of vertical and horizontal road signs and road surface maintenance.

Finally, the commitment to continue monitoring the areas most exposed to accidents and to accelerate the implementation of planned interventions to safeguard the safety of road users and prevent accidents was reaffirmed.
