Cellole, attempted scam on 91-year-old: 51-year-old reported

A phone call, the voice of a supposed police officer, and a request to "check" her jewelry after a robbery. This is the pattern used this morning by a 51-year-old man from the Naples area who attempted to approach a 91-year-old woman living in Cellole.

The plan was halted before reaching the front door: the woman, suspicious, called the real Carabinieri. According to the reconstruction of the Cellole Carabinieri station, the man introduced himself on the phone as a member of the Carabinieri and announced a home visit.

The stated reason: to check the victim's gold items following a robbery. The 91-year-old woman refused to comply and called for police intervention. The Carabinieri arrived in time to identify the 51-year-old and prevent the attempted robbery.

During the investigation, the Citroën C3 used by the man, which was found to be rented, was seized, along with a cell phone and an obviously counterfeit badge. The badge read "Local Police," but the image was of a Carabinieri officer in uniform. At the end of the investigation, the man was charged with attempted fraud, possession of counterfeit insignia, and driving with a revoked license.

The documents have been forwarded to the judicial authorities. The person charged is considered not guilty until a final sentence is handed down. The military once again warns, especially the elderly and family members: no Carabinieri officer asks for money, jewelry, or documents for "checks" after a robbery. In the event of suspicious phone calls or visits, do not open the door, do not hand over anything, and call 112 immediately.
