Twenty liters of oil and contaminated sand spilled in Lucrino: a resident cleaned the beach and raised the alarm.

A potential environmental disaster was averted along the Lucrino coastline, in the municipality of Pozzuoli, thanks to the solo initiative of a resident of Naples' historic center. The man, who regularly cleans up beach waste in his spare time, stumbled upon serious oily contamination.

Without hesitation, he independently recovered approximately 20 liters of spilled oil, placing it safely inside a container, and bagged the sand soaked in the polluting liquid, leaving it on site awaiting disposal operations.

The appeal of the institutions

The incident was immediately reported to Francesco Emilio Borrelli, a member of Parliament for the Green and Left Alliance, who highlighted the seriousness of the incident. "We are faced with a very serious incident," the MP stated. "A private citizen had to intervene out of his own pocket to prevent the situation from escalating. It is now essential to immediately identify those responsible for the pollution, secure the entire beach, and proceed with the cleanup of the remaining materials."

Checks and prevention

While praising the volunteer's civic-mindedness, Borrelli emphasized that protecting the environment cannot rest solely on the shoulders of individuals. "Citizens cannot become environmental sentinels or manage dangerous substances," the MP concluded. "A beach cannot be used as a dumping ground for oils and poisons. We are calling for rigorous investigations to verify the possible presence of other toxic slicks: prevention must precede damage, not chase it."
