Verona doctor scammed twice in 24 hours by Neapolitan "traveling" experts: €150 loot

Verona – The scam was triggered twice in the space of twenty-four hours, orchestrated by the same ruthless telephone call. A 64-year-old doctor from Verona fell victim to a massive scam orchestrated by fictitious law enforcement officers, a criminal organization with a logistics base in Naples.

The Verona State Police, however, managed to break the chain of fraud, arresting two young Italian "travelers" red-handed just as they were collecting the second installment of the loot.

The Safety Deposit Box Trap

The second robbery followed the same psychological persuasion used the previous day. The professional was contacted by phone by a fake agent who convinced him to empty his safe deposit box at a bank in San Pietro in Cariano.

The excuse given was the need to perform an imminent "technical inspection" on the valuables to verify they were not the proceeds of crime and confirm their legitimate provenance. The doctor then headed to the agreed-upon meeting point, handing over the bag containing the gold items to two phantom police officers waiting for him outside his office.

The double raid and the arrest

Just the day before, the victim had been tricked using the same scheme by the same telephone operator, handing over the contents of his home safe to two different accomplices. Unsatisfied, the criminals had pressured the man into making two instant bank transfers under the false pretext of securing his bank accounts from a suspected hacker attack.

This time, however, officers from the Verona Police Headquarters intervened immediately after the bag exchange, apprehending the two scammers before they could disappear. The operation resulted in the complete recovery of the stolen goods, with an estimated total value of over €150, including valuables, cash, and bank transactions.
