Pellezzano, the building where the tragedy occurred
A family tragedy has shocked Pellezzano, in the Salerno area. Maria Barone, 85, was found dead inside her home at Via Nicotera, number 31. According to initial reports, she suffocated in her sleep. Carabinieri arrested her 53-year-old son, Antonio Durante, who reportedly confessed to investigators that he was responsible for his mother's death.
Carabinieri from the Mercato San Severino Company responded to the case, while the investigation is being coordinated by the Salerno Public Prosecutor's Office. The coroner, the magistrate on duty, and municipal police officers also arrived on the scene.
The sequence of events is still being examined by investigators. The 53-year-old, who lived in the house with his mother and older brother, apparently left the house after committing the crime and waited in the street for the Carabinieri to arrive.
He reportedly told the Carabinieri officers that he could no longer cope with his family situation. This circumstance will need to be verified through further investigative and judicial investigations.
According to what emerged in the early hours of the investigation, the man also made some practical arrangements before taking action, setting aside money for his mother's funeral and what he deemed necessary to provide assistance to his brother in the event of his arrest. Investigators will now need to delve deeper into these details to understand what actually happened and reconstruct the exact timeline of events.
The arrested man's older brother, a 55-year-old with psychiatric issues and requiring assistance, remained inside the home. Following the tragedy, the necessary services were activated to ensure his safety and assistance.
Police, paramedics, and social workers responded to the home. A possible transfer to a facility suitable for his needs is under consideration.
The brother's situation is one of the aspects on which social services and operators who intervened on site are focusing their attention.
The Salerno Public Prosecutor's Office, led by Prosecutor Raffaele Cantone, is coordinating the investigation. Investigators will need to clarify the precise circumstances of Maria Barone's death and verify the account provided by her son.
The forensic medical examination will be crucial to establishing the cause of death and providing useful information to reconstruct the circumstances. All evidence collected from the home and any witness statements useful to reconstruct what happened before and after the 85-year-old's death will also be examined.
The news deeply affected the community of Pellezzano. Mayor Francesco Morra expressed the condolences of the administration and the entire community, calling what happened a "huge tragedy."
The mayor emphasized that the woman's death is a blow not only to the family, but to the entire community, announcing the immediate activation of the municipal social services to ensure the necessary support for those involved.
"Today Pellezzano is a wounded community, united in grief and human solidarity," Morra declared, urging citizens to remain silent and respect the family's pain.
The investigation continues to shed full light on the tragedy and establish, through investigations by the judiciary and investigators, responsibilities and the circumstances of the events.
