A condominium dispute erupts and gunfire erupts: the hunt for the gunman is on.
Naples – It was a short step from the most trivial of arguments over petty neighborhood issues to lead poisoning. A tense evening rocked Barra, an eastern suburb of Naples, where tragedy nearly struck inside a condominium complex at number 179 Corso Bruno Buozzi.
According to investigators' initial reconstruction, at least two families residing in the building faced each other head-on.
The dangerous escalation of violence on Sunday evening was apparently triggered by a seemingly insignificant and rude gesture: a cigarette butt carelessly thrown from an upper-floor balcony, which ended up falling on the floor below or in the common area of the condominium.
From that moment on, a veritable inferno broke out. The initial recriminations and complaints quickly escalated into a rapid-fire barrage of mutual insults, shouting, and threats, drawing the attention of dozens of frightened residents and condominium owners.
The situation escalated, however, when one of the brawlers pulled out a firearm, firing at chest height and into the crowd amidst the general uproar. Only pure luck averted the worst: the fired bullet missed anyone present, preventing a quarrel on the landing from escalating into a bloodbath with disastrous consequences.
The red alert was raised around 21 pm on Sunday, when the operations centre of the single emergency number 112 was inundated with numerous terrified calls from neighbours, alarmed by the din of the violent brawl and the subsequent sharp echo of the gunshot.
Within minutes, as reported by Il Roma, patrol cars from the San Giovanni-Barra police station rushed to the scene with sirens blaring. Upon their rapid arrival, however, the crowd of residents and the main perpetrators of the violent altercation had already disappeared down the stairwells and into the streets adjacent to the building, attempting to erase all traces of the incident and evade police checks.
State Police officers immediately cordoned off the area and carried out a thorough inspection, combing through the entire property and quickly finding evidence.
During the investigation, the police identified and seized a warhead lodged in the area of the attack, confirming the absolute veracity of the reports received by the operations room.
The investigation is now proceeding at a rapid pace: investigators are interviewing several witnesses and examining images recorded by public and private video surveillance cameras in the area to definitively identify all the participants in the violent fight and, in particular, to put a face and name to the person who grabbed the gun and pulled the trigger.
