Barra's Lily Festival: A lily and a song for Domenico, his mother in tears: "An indescribable emotion."

Naples – At the Gigli di Barra festival, held today in the suburb of Naples, there was a touching tribute to little Domenico Caliendo, the child who died following a failed heart transplant. Among the obelisks in the parade, one was entirely dedicated to him: the "Giglio Insuperabile" (Insuperable Giglio), a sign of affection and memory.

The song that made mom cry

Next to the obelisk, a song dedicated to Domenico was performed, described as "touching" and depicting the little boy as a true "son of Barra." His mother, Patrizia Mercolino, was there to listen, tearfully: "Seeing how much affection they gave him moved me," she confessed. "I can't find the right words to thank them for all this love: what they did for him was extraordinary."

The project born after the tragedy

The idea to create the lily dedicated to Domenico dates back to early March, a few days after his death in the intensive care unit of the Monaldi Hospital in Naples. The little boy had received a new heart on December 23, 2025, but the organ, taken from a donor in Bolzano, had arrived damaged due to the incorrect use of dry ice as a refrigerant.

"Domenico plays with us": the most touching moment

Among the most touching moments of the day, Patrizia especially remembers the children's approach: "The most touching moment was when they approached me and said, 'Domenico, play with us.'" A simple yet meaningful gesture that restored the little boy's place in the community's heart.

Thanks to the "red and blue girls"

The woman extended a special thank you to the "red and blue girls," the group that performed the song dedicated to Domenico: "I couldn't stop the tears when they played it for me. After all these months, seeing that my son is so loved is a tremendous emotion for me. From now on, he will come here, to them, with all his heart."

"The 2026 Barra Gigli Festival has an even greater meaning for us," the Insperabile fishing team explains on their official page. They then add: "As you well know, our Alzata was dedicated to little Domenico Caliendo, and in his memory, we wanted our Giglio to tell a story that goes beyond the traditional festival themes.

Thanks to the valuable collaboration with We Trade, a company specializing in Christmas lights, the idea was born to transform the Giglio's covering into a Christmas theme, with a large heart in the center, a symbol of the love and memory that will accompany us throughout this holiday.

A Giglio designed for them: children. For those little eyes that gaze upon the Giglio with wonder every year, that follow the music, the lights, the colors, and that dream along with us.
