Avellino: Suspicious substance found in a package intended for an inmate, raising security concerns in the overcrowded prison.

In Avellino, yesterday, a routine check on deliveries to inmates reportedly led to the discovery of a suspicious substance, presumably heroin, hidden in the seams of a towel contained in a package brought by a family member for an interview. The incident rekindles attention on the security conditions at the prison, already under pressure due to overcrowding.

Raffaele Dragone, UIL FP Penitentiary Police delegate in Avellino, described the situation as "extremely critical," where attempts to smuggle illicit substances are being faced daily. "Yesterday's alleged discovery is a wake-up call we cannot ignore," he said.

Raffaele Troise, the head of the same organization, praised the officers: "Despite the difficulties, the staff remains vigilant and ensures safety within the prison. Incidents like this demonstrate the need to strengthen controls."

According to data cited by the union, the facility houses approximately 690 inmates, compared to a regulated capacity of 503: approximately 37% over capacity. Troise believes overcrowding hinders the work of officers, who are forced to operate under stress and with limited resources. "Urgent intervention by the authorities is needed to reduce inmates, improve the facility, and ensure minimum safety standards. Otherwise, incidents such as drug trafficking in packages risk becoming increasingly frequent," he warned.
