Ischia - Students at the Enrico Mattei High School in Casamicciola Terme, on the island of Ischia, took to the streets this morning to protest the alleged presence of rats inside the school. This is the second demonstration related to the same issue since the beginning of the school year.
Some of the students decided not to go to class and, after gathering outside the school, marched to Piazza Marina, in the town center. The demonstration proceeded without any tension; the Carabinieri intervened on the scene to monitor the situation.
The students are demanding decisive action to ensure adequate sanitation and hygiene in the building and the continuity of normal classes. The main focus is on maintenance and cleaning of the facility: the students are calling on the Municipality of Casamicciola Terme and the Metropolitan City of Naples.
According to some testimonies gathered during the protest, the problem is primarily related to the school's outdoor areas, where rodents could enter the building. Students are therefore also calling for a sanitization system for the surrounding area.
The protest comes just weeks after a similar demonstration. A rodent control program had been carried out in the meantime, and the company responsible for monitoring the facility is reportedly continuing its monitoring efforts. However, there has been no official confirmation of a new infestation within the facility.
The school principal, Rosaria Scotti, also reportedly identified the external area as the critical area, not the internal spaces, particularly the road and the area affected by construction work surrounding the building.
The rodent issue had previously been compounded by protests over water supply problems. In total, since the beginning of the school year, students have reported three early dismissals: one due to a lack of water and two due to the presence of mice.

Mattei is one of the island's leading secondary schools, attended by several hundred students. The new demonstration thus brings the conditions of school environments and the need for coordinated action between the school, the municipality, and the Metropolitan City back to the forefront of local debate.
