Child abuse in Naples, Manfredi: "There's too much individualism among young people, and social media is influencing this cultural drift."

Naples – Child violence and growing distress among young people challenge not only families and institutions, but also the cultural and social model in which new generations grow up. Drawing attention to these issues is the mayor of Naples and national president of the National Association of Italian Municipalities (ANCI), Gaetano Manfredi, who identifies excessive individualism, a lack of respect for rules, and a lack of respect for others as some of the most critical issues facing contemporary society.

"Today we face major problems that affect both global issues and everyday life. Lack of respect for others, disregard for rules, and excessive individualism are having a profound impact on young people," Manfredi said on the sidelines of the event "Adam, Where Are You? The Human Person and Contemporary Society," hosted at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples.

Daily conflicts and the fragility of relationships

In the mayor's reasoning, the youth issue is intertwined with a broader problem of social cohesion. The difficulties communities face, according to Manfredi, also emerge in the growing inability to manage interpersonal relationships and the conflicts of daily life.

"Young people represent a major ethical and social cohesion issue," the mayor emphasized, highlighting how even seemingly minor disagreements can escalate and lead to painful consequences.

“We experience great difficulties in our communities because individual conflicts, often for trivial reasons, become the cause of great suffering,” he added.

A reminder that brings to the center of the debate the value of education in respect, individual responsibility, and the ability to recognize in others a person worth engaging with, even when disagreements and tensions arise.

The role of social media in cultural drift

Manfredi defined the current one as a "complex cultural drift to address," also pointing to the influence of social networks among the factors contributing to the phenomenon.

This reference is part of a more general reflection on the changes affecting relationships among young people and the mechanisms through which behaviors, role models, and ways of interacting are formed. The mayor does not identify a single cause, but emphasizes the need to understand youth distress in light of a multitude of factors, affecting both the personal and collective dimensions.

The issue, therefore, is not only about the episodes of violence, but also the cultural context in which intolerance, the inability to accept limitations, and the difficulty of addressing conflicts without resorting to aggressive behavior can develop.

Cardinal Ravasi's reflection

The event at the Teatro San Carlo offered an opportunity to address these questions, starting with the theme of the human person in contemporary society. Manfredi particularly emphasized the contribution of Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, attributing the reflections offered during the meeting as valuable for understanding the transformations underway.

"The reflection proposed today by Cardinal Ravasi offers us a fundamental key to understanding this phenomenon," the mayor concluded.

The message emerging from the presentation is the need to address youth hardship as an educational, cultural, and social issue, not just addressing individual incidents. This is a challenge that involves institutions and communities and requires refocusing on respect for rules, personal responsibility, and the quality of human relationships.
