Salvatore Calignano
Naples – The fractures found on Salvatore Calignano's body are consistent with a fall from a considerable height, estimated at least eight meters. This is according to Francesco Petruzzi, attorney representing the family of the 61-year-old construction worker who died on October 3rd after being rescued the previous day in critical condition in Caivano.
The autopsy took place on Thursday, October 8. Forensic pathologist Luca Scognamiglio, appointed by the Calignano family, also participated in the examination.
"Fractures to the sternum, pelvis, wrist, and sacrum were found, consistent with a fall from a considerable height, at least eight meters," Petruzzi stated. According to the lawyer, the injuries are so severe that the 61-year-old is unable to walk independently.
This information fits into the investigative framework opened by the North Naples Prosecutor's Office, which is tasked with reconstructing the location and circumstances of the accident, as well as the sequence of events following the man's injury.
Calignano, a resident of Orta di Atella, was found by emergency services on Via Fosso del Lupo, a remote street in Caivano. Before losing consciousness, he reported to paramedics that he had fallen from a ladder.
According to family reports, Calignano had called his wife on October 2nd, telling her he was working on the roof of a warehouse. It's from that very structure that investigators are considering the possibility of a fall.
It remains unclear why the 61-year-old was rescued in a location other than where, according to the reconstruction under consideration, the accident may have occurred. Among the investigative hypotheses is that the worker may have been transported to Via Fosso del Lupo after being injured. The investigation ordered by the Prosecutor's Office will determine whether, and if so, by whom, he was moved. The press reported that his car was found near the warehouse.
The case, coordinated by Deputy Prosecutor Sabrina Navarro, includes three people under investigation: the two owners of the warehouse and the worker's employer. The alleged crime is manslaughter in cooperation with others.
The employer is now also facing charges of intentionally removing or failing to provide safety precautions against workplace accidents. The charge was filed in anticipation of the investigations into the cell phones seized by the Carabinieri: the assignment for forensic copies is scheduled for October 15th.
The investigation will also examine the 61-year-old's contractual and employment conditions. The investigations cited by the family's lawyer reveal that he received NASPI benefits for September and had his employment regularized a few days before the accident, a circumstance about which the family has expressed doubts.
Salvatore Calignano's funeral will be held on Friday, October 9, at 5:30 p.m., in the church of San Massimo in Orta di Atella, in the Caserta area, where the worker lived with his wife and two daughters.
The autopsy, tests on the electronic devices, and further technical investigations will now provide answers about the dynamics of the accident, the location of the fall, and any responsibilities related to workplace safety.
