Picentini Mountains Park: Timber theft: Giffoni Valle Piana man arrested

An incident of particular environmental significance occurred today in the Monti Picentini Regional Park, where illegal logging was discovered in an area classified as a strict nature reserve and a Special Protection Area. According to investigations, the felling involved approximately 70 tall trees, mostly alders and a small number of maples, within the protected area. The resulting timber is estimated at approximately 300 kilograms.

The operation was conducted by the Carabinieri of the Giffoni Valle Piana Forestry Unit, who executed a house arrest order by order of the investigating judge of the Court of Salerno, at the request of the Public Prosecutor's Office. The man involved, a resident of the area, is under investigation for theft in connection with the felling last June, which occurred without authorization or clearance from the competent authorities.

The affected area is classified as a strict nature reserve and a Special Protection Area, as well as subject to forestry and landscape restrictions. Illegal logging and felling have caused deterioration of the landscape, altering its physical consistency, tree continuity, and usability, according to the findings of the investigation. Details of the investigation have been provided by the judicial authorities and law enforcement agencies involved in the operation.
