The 3-0 defeat against Napoli leaves Frosinone feeling bitter. Massimiliano Alvini acknowledges the Azzurri's performance, but believes the defeat is excessive compared to what his team showed, especially when the game was still open.
"If the penalty wasn't on the line, it was right to have it retaken. Feliciani did well, and rightly so. Napoli deserved a victory, even if the score was too large. As for the performance, we were less effective than usual and more dirty," the coach told Sky Sport after the match at the Maradona.
The reference is to the penalty initially saved by Palmisani from Hojlund, then retaken due to the goalkeeper's improper positioning. From the spot, Kevin De Bruyne gave Napoli the lead in the second attempt, turning the tables on a game that Frosinone had hoped to have handled differently.
"It's a shame because when we were back in the game, we conceded a penalty that we could have avoided. At that point, we made things difficult for ourselves," Alvini added.
The coach identified offensive choices and a lack of consistency as some of the main limitations of the performance. "We made poor decisions in the final twenty meters when the game was tied and we had opportunities to hurt them. When we had chances to get back in the game, we weren't effective. Usually, we are more so."
Despite the result, Alvini sees the match as a useful opportunity to identify areas for improvement. Several Frosinone players were new to the Maradona Stadium, a factor that may have affected the management of certain moments of the match.
"The match offers a lot of opportunities for improvement. There were many players who were playing at the Maradona for the first time. There was a certain lack of concentration, but I consider it a sign of status and a clear identity," the coach explained.
The path forward, according to Alvini, now lies in growing the team and gaining more experience in managing matches against high-level opponents. "We need to improve certain situations and gain a little more experience with a more effective approach to these types of matches."
