Ischia, extraordinary plan to reduce accidents: roadworks along the entire road network and weekly checks.

Greater safety on Ischia's roads: the prefect is implementing construction sites and inspections. The Observatory for monitoring and planning road accident interventions, coordinated by the Prefecture of Naples, continues its work steadily. In recent days, Prefect Michele Di Bari sent an operational circular to the mayor of the Metropolitan City, the mayors of the island's six municipalities, and law enforcement officials, following up on the technical meetings held in recent weeks and encouraging faster implementation of the measures already planned.

At the heart of the strategy are two levers: improving infrastructure and intensifying controls on speed, alcohol, drugs, and compliance with the Highway Code.

Infrastructure: new asphalt, raised crossings and “Zone 30”

Over the course of the year, the Observatory met 17 times, examining in detail the interventions already completed, those underway, and those planned by the island municipalities and the Metropolitan City of Naples. Among the priorities: combating accidents with targeted interventions at the most critical traffic points.

Work already started and in progress

Refurbishment of vertical and horizontal road signs in areas with heavy vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
Installation of speed bumps and new traffic lights, especially near schools.
Resurfacing of several kilometers of road in the municipalities of Barano d'Ischia, Lacco Ameno, Casamicciola Terme, and Forio, as well as along the Succhivo–Sant'Angelo connection.

Road upgrade with new sidewalk along the former SS 270 (via Michele Mazzella, Pilastri), in the municipality of Ischia.

Upcoming construction sites: support, hydraulic regulation and barriers

Support and completion works for the hydraulic management system protecting the roadway along the former SS 270, in the Ciglio area (Serrara Fontana), are planned to begin soon. The planned projects also include:
Safety barriers (guardrails) on the “Sopraelevata” of Ischia.
Improved signage at the intersection of SP 431 and SP 484 in Forio.
Improved visibility of pedestrian crossings on Via B. Cossa in Ischia.

Ischia Municipality's plan: over 20 streets affected

The Municipality of Ischia has announced that the resurfacing work on the worn road surface will affect a wide range of streets: Via A. De Luca, Via M. Mazzella, Via Quercia, Via B. Cossa, Via N. dei Conti, Via Morgioni, Piazza degli Eroi, Via E. Cortese, Via N. Cartaromana, Via GB Vico, Via Acquedotto, a section of Via Antonio Sogliuzzo, Via dell'Amicizia, a section of Via Roma and Corso Vittoria Colonna.

In the Ischia area, 12 raised pedestrian crossings have already been installed at all schools and along sections of the road where serious accidents have historically occurred. In Forio, seven more pedestrian crossings, also raised, are planned along Via Provinciale Panza, Via Madonna delle Grazie, and Via G. Mazzella.

In addition, “Zone 30” speed zones, urban areas with controlled speeds and a maximum speed limit of 30 km/h, have been established on numerous roads on the island to reduce the risk of accidents in residential and school areas.
Complementary signage and optical bands
The Metropolitan City has already installed additional signage to highlight obstacles at the edges of the roadway along the former SS 270 (Serrara Fontana and Barano) and on the SP 93 (Via Vatoliere) in Barano. Additional traffic lights are planned in the coming weeks near schools and along the former SS 270 in Forio, the SP 431 "Borbonica" (intersections with Via Spinavola and Via Crateca).

The overall plan also includes:
Channeling traffic flows at critical points (roundabouts, traffic islands).
New safety barriers (guardrails).
Construction and widening of sidewalks.
Speed cameras coming to the island's main road

To reduce vehicle speed, a review is underway with local authorities for the installation of speed cameras, with particular attention to the former Provincial Road, one of the main connecting routes that runs through all the island's municipalities. The prefect has repeatedly emphasized the deterrent value of these devices, which are already the focus of a technical discussion at the Prefecture.

Police checks: 16 vehicles inspected, several fines issued

Great attention is also being paid to road control and surveillance by local police forces, with the support of the Metropolitan Police and the Highway Patrol. During the operations ordered by the Provincial Committee for Public Order and Safety on September 22nd and carried out between September 24th and October 1st in Forio and Ischia Porto, 16 vehicles were inspected, 24 people were identified, and several charges were issued, primarily for:
Driving without insurance coverage.
Failure to inspect the vehicle.
Failure to use seat belts.
Checks will continue weekly in other areas of the island, including on weekends and during peak traffic hours, to specifically combat driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

The prefect's mandate: accelerate the interventions already planned
In closing, the Prefecture reiterated the need to continue monitoring the areas most affected by accidents and to accelerate the implementation of planned interventions to strengthen road user protection and make accident prevention more effective on the island.
