A psychic's session
Naples – The Prosecutor's Office will have to conduct further investigations, and the investigation cannot be closed. The Preliminary Investigations Judge of the Naples Court, Sabato Abagnale, has upheld the Public Prosecutor's opposition to the case's dismissal, ordering new investigations into the case of the self-styled psychic active on social media.
The woman claimed to be able to contact the deceased during some live streams, asking in exchange for monetizable “virtual gifts.”
Through social media platforms, particularly TikTok, the woman allegedly exploited the profound grief of those connected to her site to generate financial gain. During live broadcasts, the alleged psychic promised to act as a go-between for followers' deceased loved ones, but on one condition: continued donations.
If the virtual gifts were delayed, the woman threatened to interrupt the broadcast. At that point, the chat moderators intervened, providing users with practical instructions—a sort of "tutorial"—on how to make payments by purchasing prepaid cards.
Also weighing on the evidence is the alleged misuse of her title: the woman was presented as a psychologist, a factor that would have encouraged particularly vulnerable individuals to place their trust in her. However, investigations conducted by the Campania Association of Psychologists confirmed that the self-styled professional had never been registered with the professional association.
The request for dismissal presented by the Naples Public Prosecutor's Office was based on the technical complexities associated with cybercrime and the difficulty of obtaining relevant data without resorting to international letters rogatory to foreign companies that manage social media.
Preliminary Investigating Judge Abagnale disagrees, stating that "the possibilities for identifying the perpetrator" of the crime are by no means exhausted. He believes there is still substantial investigative scope to identify the account administrators and the recipients of the donations.
Satisfaction with the judge's decision was expressed by the people who filed the complaint and by the association "La Battaglia di Andrea," which supported them throughout the legal process.
"Behind these events are not just donations and money, but people experiencing moments of extreme fragility, including psychological ones, who deserve protection and respect," the association's leaders explain. "We ask that this case serve as an opportunity for a broader, nationwide investigation into similar phenomena that are now flooding social media and can involve vulnerable individuals."
