Severe weather: Orange alert in effect from 15 p.m. in Naples, the islands, and the Vesuvian area.

From 3:00 PM today, Thursday, October 8, until 3:00 PM tomorrow, Friday, October 9, an orange alert is in effect for Zone 1 of Campania, which includes Naples, the Campanian plain, the Vesuvian area, and the islands in the Gulf: Ischia, Procida, and Capri.

The decision was made by the Campania Region's Civil Protection Department, which extended the existing weather alert to the entire region and raised the criticality level in the most exposed areas. The rest of Campania remains under a yellow alert.

Heavy showers and thunderstorms

The worsening weather conditions are linked to the intensification of precipitation, which is also expected in the form of particularly intense showers and thunderstorms.

According to the framework outlined by the Civil Protection, these phenomena could cause widespread hydrogeological instability and localized hydraulic problems, with particular attention to Zone 1.
The highest risk concerns already fragile slopes, where rainfall could cause superficial landslides, rapid mudslides and debris flows, and even deeper instability phenomena.

Floods and waterways under observation

The expected phenomena do not only affect hilly and mountainous areas. Surface runoff, material transport, and rising levels of smaller watercourses are possible throughout the region.

Flooding of basements and ground floors, as well as water runoff along streets, cannot be ruled out. Particular attention is also paid to potential backflow of stormwater drainage systems, resulting in overflows in low-lying urban areas.
The scenarios indicated by the Civil Protection also include rockfalls and landslides, favored by the fragile hydrogeological conditions of some areas.

Gulf Islands, lands already saturated

A situation requiring particular caution is reported on the Gulf Islands. Here, the risk of landslides is exacerbated by soil saturation caused by recent rainfall.
The combination of already waterlogged soil and new heavy rainfall can increase the possibility of landslides and mudslides, especially along the most vulnerable slopes.

Mayors urged to keep COCs active

The Regional Civil Protection Department has invited mayors to activate or maintain the Municipal Operations Centers (COCs) and to implement all measures set out in their respective Municipal Civil Protection Plans.
Monitoring should focus in particular on hydrogeological and hydraulic risks, but also on public green spaces and structures most exposed to stresses caused by wind and wave motion.
The goal is to maintain high levels of vigilance throughout the duration of the alert, especially in areas where land conditions have already been compromised by previous rainfall.
