"We learned of Minister Musumeci's statements regarding yesterday's demonstration from the press and are surprised." The mayors of the Campi Flegrei region responded to the Minister for Civil Protection and Maritime Policies' comments on the demonstration in Rome, claiming they had informed the government in advance of the reasons for the protest.
The joint statement was signed by Luigi Manzoni, mayor of Pozzuoli, Josi Gerardo Della Ragione, mayor of Bacoli, Antonio Sabino, mayor of Quarto, and Salvatore Scotto di Santolo, head of Monte di Procida.
"The initiative was announced last week in a letter addressed to your ministry, as well as to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and other ministers, in which we explained the reasons for the mobilization, desired by the citizens, and for our participation," the administrators emphasize.
The communication, they explain, clearly stated "citizens' exasperation and disappointment over the rejected amendments." Their presence in the capital had a specific goal: to secure concrete commitments for families forced to leave their homes, for the safety of buildings, and for local businesses.
"But we were also there to mend the deep rift that has now developed between citizens and the government," the mayors added, citing rebuilding relationships with institutions as one of the central reasons for the mobilization.
The statement attempts to resolve the conflict, without abandoning the demands made to the government. "We remain fully available for dialogue, and we fully intend to leave the controversy aside. Everything that has happened has led us to today; now we must look to tomorrow."
Attention now turns to the expected new decree to address the consequences of bradyseism. The four administrators are calling for the measure to include adequate measures, accompanied by funding and defined deadlines.
"This is why we expect the new decree to provide adequate responses, with clear resources and timelines, and we don't want to believe that the only solution is voluntary relocation," they state, warning that this prospect risks further fueling "citizens' alarm and anger." The conclusion is a message of unity and openness to discussion: "We are here, we are united, and we are ready for dialogue, always."
