Pisa prison riot quelled: 4 arrests

The night of tension in the Don Bosco prison in Pisa ended only at dawn, after several hours of protest and a complex mediation process conducted by the prison police.

The situation calmed down between 5 and 6:30 on Thursday morning, after the inmates who had taken possession of the premises of the second ward of the judicial section gradually ceased their protest.

Initial reports indicate four arrests, while further detainees may be subject to measures in the coming hours. The area affected by the riots has also reportedly suffered significant damage, which could lead to further legal consequences.

The protest and the occupied department

The protest erupted on the evening of Wednesday, September 30. According to initial information, there were approximately 56 inmates in the affected ward.

At a certain point, some inmates allegedly took control of the premises, preventing prison officers from entering. This situation necessitated the intervention of emergency response personnel within prisons and, above all, a lengthy mediation process.

Among the factors that made the situation particularly delicate was the fact that some of the access routes were apparently coated with oil, intended to make it more difficult for officers to intervene. The presence of the substance would also have increased safety risks, including the potential for fires.

The origin of the protest: the alleged "bugs"

According to initial reports, the riot was sparked by the discovery, inside some cells, of devices that the inmates interpreted as microphones or wiretapping devices installed for investigative purposes.

This is a point on which, however, particular caution is required. The presence of the devices and, above all, their nature, installation methods, and any connection to investigative activities are subject to verification.

The discovery would have fueled the protest, transforming the initial discontent into a broader mobilization within the department.

TikTok livestream from inside the prison

Further complicating matters was the ability of some inmates to use cell phones inside the facility, even though their possession is prohibited.
During the protest, a live broadcast on TikTok was reportedly launched, through which images and statements about the ongoing situation were shared from inside the prison. The live broadcast was later interrupted, but some content still ended up on social media.

This could be a factor in subsequent investigations, helping to accurately reconstruct the dynamics of the protest and identify the people involved.

The inmates' accusations and the investigations

During the live broadcast, some inmates claimed to have been hit with truncheons by the officers and contested the presence of bugs and other electronic devices in their cells.
At this stage, these are statements made by the inmates themselves during the tense phases of the protest, which will need to be verified by the competent authorities. Therefore, at this stage, they cannot be considered definitively established facts.

At the same time, the methods of intervention by the prison police and the various phases through which the protest ended will need to be reconstructed.

Hours of negotiations, then calm returns

For hours, prison officers worked to prevent the situation from escalating further. Their strategy was primarily mediation, until the protests gradually subsided.

The situation returned to normal in the early hours of the morning, between 5 and 6:30 a.m., with safety conditions restored within the department.

At that point, the first measures were taken against the alleged perpetrators of the riots: four inmates were arrested and transferred, while further arrests or other measures could be taken in the coming hours in light of the investigations into the damage and conduct during the protest.

Now the investigation into the night of tension

The most delicate phase of the emergency is now over, but for investigators, their work has only just begun. They will need to reconstruct the sequence of events, establish who took control of the unit, ascertain the origin and nature of the devices found in the cells, identify the inmates who used the cell phones, and determine who is responsible for the damage.

The investigation will also focus on any images acquired from the live social media feed and other videos circulating during the protest.

The issue of the alleged "bugs" also remains to be definitively clarified: it will be necessary to establish what the devices found by the inmates actually were, who installed them, and for what purpose. This is a crucial step in understanding whether that discovery was actually the spark that ignited the riot or merely the element that brought to light existing discontent within the unit.
