Qualiano, unanimous advice on speed, controls, and e-bikes: De Leonardis' package

The Qualiano City Council unanimously approved a package of measures to improve safety on the city's streets, prevent dangerous behavior, and protect those who travel through the city every day. The proposal, presented by majority councilors, was supplemented in the council chamber with contributions from other councilors, including minority ones, until a text was approved by the entire assembly.

What the plan entails

The measures include mapping the most at-risk areas, improving signage, installing devices to combat speeding, strengthening prevention efforts, and an awareness campaign among residents and in schools. The Municipality will also evaluate regional funding to support the measures.

The package is accompanied by an ordinance currently being drafted regarding the use of electric bicycles, an increasingly widespread phenomenon for which the administration is calling for clear rules and greater awareness.

«Repression and prevention»

"Too many cars speed without respecting speed limits and signs, too many vehicles are driving without insurance or inspections, and we still see very young people driving vehicles they shouldn't drive," says Mayor Raffaele De Leonardis. These behaviors, he adds, expose anyone using the roads to risk and require both enforcement and prevention.

The unanimous vote, according to the mayor, is a signal: when it comes to safety, "there must be no affiliation or division." Prevention, enforcement, education, and responsibility "must go hand in hand." De Leonardis thanked law enforcement and announced a greater commitment from the local police, with a rationalization of resources. Schools, associations, and families will also be involved, for a "pact with the city and for the city."

The thought of the sixteen year old

During his remarks in the chamber, the mayor spared a thought for the sixteen-year-old from Qualiano, who remains in intensive care following a car accident a few days ago. "The institutions will do their part with tools, prevention, and monitoring, but everyone's commitment is needed," he concluded. "On the road, everyone's responsibility translates into everyone's safety."
